"The Conscious Performer Intensive:
Clarity, Context, Cohesion"
A Nutmeg Studio Progressive Piano/Chamber Music
Hybrid Intensive
Feb 21 - Mar 21, 2027
for Curious Adult Musicians, Educators, and Music-Lovers
A masterful musical performance is when we feel inspired and expand ourselves to be fully present. A bland musical performance occurs when you play to avoid mistakes. Performing is about achieving a presence and human connection, and it requires intentional, patient, conscious preparation.
Building on all the Nutmeg Studio intensives to maximize expression, we will deep dive into a professional level of conscious performing that is supported by discussions, worksheets, and masterclasses for both artistic refinement and human connection.
REQUIRED REPERTOIRE:
This workshop is for pieces you have already performed that is fully prepared. 5-8 minutes duration (can be an excerpt).
GOALS:
1) While we can zoom in to work obsessively about the clarity of a particular note, we will practice remaining conscious of how it fits in context with the rest of the phrase and the rest of the piece.
2) We will also constantly adapt to the context of the room acoustics, the instrument, and the many changing variables to create live music that is optimized each unique moment.
3) We will make sure all the notes require cohesion so that from the first note to the last note, everything belongs together. The result carries more impact than the sum of the parts.
We will target
a) score study for dramatic presentation
physical technique, and
emotional technique
*If you are able to extend that slow-burn progress to our class trip to Rome in May, you will find even more nuances and inspiration.

What Great Musicians said...
Yo-Yo Ma: "Music is powered by ideas. If you don't have clarity of ideas, you're just communicating sheer sound."
Eugène Ysaÿe: (As recalled by his pupil Josef Gingold) "He believed in beauty of sound. Never was the violin treated brutally. He believed in clarity."
Miles Davis on context: "Through checking out your surroundings, you will see what is needed. You have to know what to leave out, as well as what to put in."
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart on context: "The music is not in the notes, but in the silence between."
Aaron Copland: "A theme is, after all, only a succession of notes. It is the cohesive development of that theme that makes a piece of music a whole."
